Generation X (and the front end of Gen Y) are quite different from their Baby Boomer bosses and are not a good fit in the newsroom as we know it. These folks don't want to work long and irregular hours, they want to be well paid and expect to get help with advancement. They are part of a job-hopping generation and so their needs will have to be taken seriously because there is a shortage of good replacements coming behind them. Newsrooms will need to make some changes to accommodate them.
